Embracing Layers of Life through Mixed Media Art
This year has been full: moving house, renovating, welcoming grandchildren, and settling into our new home by the ocean. Life is full of surprises and twists, but it’s also loud, warm and deliciously busy.
I love living by the sea. The light, the breeze, the walks through the greenery in Shorncliffe where I live, the ever-changing patterns of water and sand.
These all make their way into my artworks as I create patterns of life through lines and colour, capturing the beauty in the everyday so you can feel this bright and invigorating energy too.
My art tries to hold some of that delight and share it with you.
So if you love colour, patterns, sketches, and the idea of stories stitched together in layers: welcome.
You’re in the right place.
Mixing Sketches and Stories
I’m not just collecting sketches in my journals and travels. I’m collecting stories.
Stories of garden discoveries, of detailed patterns in leaves and textures, favourite fabrics, wallpaper and tiles. Many seemingly ordinary objects around my home become starting points. I notice life repeating in patterns, in colours, shapes, and motifs; and I enjoy letting those repetitions appear in new, colourful ways on paper and canvas.
Sometimes a tiny scrap of fabric or a photo from a trip sparks an entire piece.
Other times a tile pattern nudges my brushes and pens in surprising directions.
Connecting through Colour
I have a gentle and creative morning routine. It’s where the best work begins.
When the world feels overwhelming I turn to mandalas: small, meditative drawings that reset me.
They centre me. They energise me. They remind me how colour and cycles can comfort and heal.
Because colour isn’t just decoration; it’s a way of communicating with myself, and with you. Capturing colour in my work can help me hold on to the memories I want to hold on to.
My pieces often start as a mood: bright, calm, playful or wistful, and colours help me tell that story.
Before I begin creating, I’ll play the hang drum to find a centering rhythm, or draw mandala and mendhi-style patterns to free my mind and open my line work.
These small rituals help me settle into a curious place where ideas arrive easily, and simpler to share stories through sketches, colours and line.
Urban Stories and Sketches from Across the Sea
My mixed media artwork blends drawing, gouache, paints and sometimes found materials. Each art piece is a collage of memory and observation, and altogether my collection of work resounds with joyful, adventurous spirit, and full of heart for the places I’ve been and seen.
Pages fill quickly, as my sketchbook travels with me all the time, drawing cities, markets, people, doorways, street scenes. They’re colourful, stylised, and uplifting glimpses of everyday moments.

Cherish Your Connections
The best part about my creative career so far is being able to continue exploring and making with my lifelong friends.
We formed Five Lines Art Collective, and you’ll see them creating and laughing alongside me on my social media posts!
You’ll usually find us exhibiting at Et Al Gallery and Studio in Sandgate, and running creative workshops (or buying more art supplies) at Arthouse Northside.
Life can be short, sweet, and full of joyful adventure.
So make the most of it, and add some colour to your life too.
